Heroes Day
The 27th November was made Great Heroes' Day from 1989 onwards to commemorate the death of Lt Shankar (or Suresh) whose real name was S.Sathianathan, a man wanted by the Sinhala army. As his leader and fellow fighters watched in tears, on 27 November 1982, he became the first LTTE fighter to die in combat.
In Tamil it is called Maaveerar Naal “Great Heroes Day”
The tradition is to light oil lamps for the three days ending on the 27th and to raise the national flag of TamilEelam at the ceremonies. The symbol for Maaveerar Day is the Karthigai Poo (Gloriosa Lily), which blooms during November.
Many Tamils voluntarily joined the LTTE with the hope of self-determination for the Tamil people in their homeland called Tamil Eelam. Many have given their lives for the cause, and although we do not have everyone, here are a few of these heroes. They sacrificed their lives for the wellbeing of the Tamil people.
